Sep 18 Christ Either Way Philippians 1:20-21

“As it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
Philippians 1:20-21ESV

Paul writes with death close enough to name. He does not chase it, pretend it is pleasant, or make courage a performance. He simply values Christ above the safety that death can threaten. If he lives, his body can honor Jesus.

If he dies, he gains the Christ he already loves. That leaves fear with less leverage. The first Christians could refuse a pinch of incense and a convenient lie because survival was not their highest good. Faithfulness was.

Most of us meet smaller tests, but the scale is the same. What can pressure purchase from you? When Christ is life and Christ waits beyond death, obedience is no longer trapped by the need to save yourself at any price.

Take it with you

Ask God for a faithful heart that treasures Christ above safety without seeking suffering.

Most courage at eighteen looks less like a courtroom and more like refusing the easy lie at work.
